FAQ

Questions, answered.

What people usually ask before booking.

Can I get a referral online?

Yes. You have a telehealth consult with an Australian GP by phone or video, and if a referral is clinically appropriate, your GP writes it. A consultation doesn’t guarantee a referral. Your GP decides what’s clinically appropriate.

Do I need a referral to see a specialist?

For the full Medicare rebate on a specialist appointment, you need a valid referral. Without one, any rebate is lower and you’ll likely pay more. Many specialists also only see patients who have one.

How long does a referral last?

A GP referral to a specialist usually lasts 12 months from your first appointment, unless your GP writes a different period. A referral from one specialist to another usually lasts 3 months.

Is it bulk billed?

Bulk billed for eligible patients. If you’re not eligible, a consultation fee may apply, and we’ll confirm it with you before your consult.

Can I choose which specialist I see?

Yes. If you have a specialist or practice in mind, tell your GP and they can address the referral to them.

Is this an emergency service?

No. If you’re seriously unwell, with chest pain, trouble breathing or signs of a stroke, call 000 or go to your nearest emergency department.

Who will I see?

An AHPRA-registered Australian GP. You talk with them by phone or video, from wherever you are in Australia.

What happens in the consult?

Your GP asks about what’s going on, how long it’s been happening, what’s been tried and any results or letters you already have. If a referral or test is appropriate, they write it. If you need a physical examination first, they’ll tell you.

Can a GP refer me without a consult?

No. Every referral follows a consultation with a GP, because the referral has to reflect a clinical assessment of what you need.

Can I get a referral for my child?

Yes. A parent or guardian can request a consult for a child under 18. The parent or guardian makes the request and joins the consult.

Can a GP refer me for an MRI?

For some conditions, yes. Medicare only covers GP-requested MRI scans in specific situations. For others, the scan needs to be requested by a specialist to be rebated, or you can pay privately. Your GP will explain which applies to you.

Can I get a referral to a psychologist?

Since 1 November 2025, the Medicare rebate for psychology sessions under Better Access needs the referral to come from your usual GP or the practice you’re registered with through MyMedicare. Your GP can talk you through your options, including a referral to a psychiatrist if that’s appropriate.

What do I need for the consult?

A phone or a device with a camera, somewhere private to talk, your Medicare card if you have one, and any recent results or letters about the issue.

Is my information private?

Yes. Your information is handled under the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles. See our privacy policy for details.
