You don't need a referral to see a psychologist in Australia — you can book privately at any time. To get a Medicare rebate, though, you need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from a GP.
A GP Mental Health Treatment Plan covers up to 10 subsidised individual psychology sessions per calendar year. Your GP assesses you, prepares the plan and refers you to a psychologist of your choice. (This is different from the up-to-5-visit Chronic Disease Management plan used for other allied health.)
